Prepare Early Before a Hurricane During a Hurricane After a Hurricane

By this time the winds are beginning to pick up and you should have all your supplies and have your windows covered.

Stay calm and wait inside:
  • DO NOT go outside for any reason.
  • Find the safest and most secure area in your home. Bathroom, small interior room, closet or hallway.
  • Keep a battery powered radio, TV or a NOAA weather radio and flashlight with you.
  • Close ALL interior doors and secure or brace exterior doors.
  • In a two-story house go to an interior first-floor room.
  • In a high-rise building, avoid upper floors and keep away from windows. Stay in interior areas, hallways interior stairwells and areas around elevator shafts are generally the strongest part of a building.
  • If the wind suddenly dies down, that may mean the eye is passing. Keep in mind that the vicious part of the storm follows the passing of the eye.
