124 day to the end of hurricane season

Hurricane Preparedness Week is May 21-27, 2006

Prepare Early Before a Hurricane During a Hurricane After a Hurricane

If you didn't prepare in advance now is the time to move quickly as supplies will not be available and lines will be long when a storm is near.

Last Minute Check List:
  • If you are in an evacuation area or you live in a mobile home, pack what you need and take any valuables. Leave early since traffic will be a major problem
  • Fill up your car early. Gas may not be available for up to 2 weeks after a hurricane strikes.
  • Check your medications, have at least a 2 week supply.
  • Latch or install storm shutters or install plywood over windows and glass doors.
  • Check your supply of canned goods, water and other supplies.
  • Set your refrigerator and freezer to coldest settings, opening only when absolutely necessary. Freeze water in plastic containers and use to fill empty spaces to keep food cool.
  • Keep an ice chest with items you access more frequently to allow your refrigerator and freezer to stay closed and stay cool longer.
  • Bring pets to an animal shelter and make sure your pets have identification
  • Bring in or tie down anything that could blow around such as bicycles, garbage cans, gas grills, patio furniture, etc.
  • Review escape routes out of your house with family members and meeting places in case you get separated.
  • Place valuables and personal papers in waterprrof containers or zippered plastic bags and store up high.
  • Add extra chlorine to the swimming pool to reduce contamination.
  • DO NOT drain water from your pool, this may cause major damage.
  • DO NOT put lawn furniture or yard items in your pool; you could ruin the surface of the pool.
