124 day echo s; ?> to the end of hurricane season
Hurricane Preparedness Week is May 21-27, 2006
Now is the time to be safety cautious and begin the long hard cleanup work.
Utilities:
- Electric
- DO NOT touch fallen or low hanging wires of any kind for any reason. Treat ALL cables and wires inside and out as if they were electrically charged, regardless of whether they are electric, cable, TV or telephone wires.
- DO NOT talk to the line reparemen. This just takes time away getting power restored.
- Call the electric company or police immediately if there are lines down or sparking in your yard or neighborhood.
- Stay away from puddles or standing water, power lines may have fallen in them.
- Even if your power is off it's a good idea to disconnect or unplug appliances so that the system will not be overloaded when the electricity is restored.
- Telephone
- DO NOT use your telephone unless you have an emergency.
- Cordless phones won't work if the electricity is off.
- Report individual trouble only after service has been generally restored in your area.
- Phone companies have plans to restore service as quickly as possible.
- Cell Phone
- Cellular phone service may be greatly limited after a storm due to tower damage, power failure or telephone line damage.
- You may have Cellular service immediately after a storm since many cellular towers have some sort of electrical backup but this electrical backup power may only last a limited amount of time.
- Getting a cellular call to connect may take several times since cellular service may be the only communication available.
- Cable
- Your cable will be out as long as you have no power.
- If your cable service is not restored once your power is back on, contact your cable company.
- Debris
- Pile debris as neatly and as close the the street as you can.
- Keep debris from cluttering around utility poles; crews will not be able to make repares if pathways are impeded.
- Garbage
- Call your local trash hauler to find out when trash pickup will resume.
- DO NOT leave your garbage out site as it may attract wild animals.
- Double bag your garbage in plastic bags and keep bags in covered containers.
- Gas
- Avoid open flames and sparks and call police or gas company if you smell or suspect leaking gas.
- Leave the area immediately.
